I don't have a top 5 but I think that my favorite songs with lyrics I appreciate are by Brad Paisley. They're consistently creative and things are well written. . . Alcohol, Online, Celebrity, Waitin on a Woman. Good stuff.

5. whoa woman, now woman don't cha treat me this way cause I'll be back on my feet some day. Don't care if you do cause it's understood you ain't got no money you just ain't no good
4. A mean spiteful razor toting woman (Poke Salad Annie--gator got your granny)
3. Three nights and days I sailed the sea, I think of her constantly. She's on that ship I dreamed she's there--I smelt the rose, uh, in her hair (or something else entirely apochrophyl and completely inappropriate with the same tune)
2. Young girls do get weary, wearing that same old funky, funky blue dress (My dad and Marianne argued for weeks about "funky", dad saying there was no such word, so it must be "foggy.")
1. He was last seen with a friend, a drummer he resembles george harrison of the beatles, but he wears his hair tied in a small bow at the back. I love him but it embarrasses me to walk down the street with...he has golden chains on his leather jacket and on the back are written the words, "Mary" and "Mom" and "Hells Angels"--this is from "Frank Mills" on the Hair Album, sung with a fragile female voice that gets me every time

In no particular order, and I will probably add more

1. "Woodstock" 3rd time through the chorus...written by Joni Mitchell..."We are star dust we are golden we are caught in the devil's bargain and we have to get our selves back to the garden."

2. from Al cohol Brad Paisley - "helpin white people dance"

3. Born to be Wild "Fire all of your guns at once and explode into space."

More to come!!!

Dennis---by the way great choice on the Song from Hair...very obscure but one of my favorites...The best line is the last line...

"Tell him Angela and I don't want to two dollars back...just him."

1.Wish I was an English Muffin
About to make the most out a toaster.
I'd ease my self down

I'd prefer boysenberry more than any ordinary jam.
I'm a citizens - for - boysenberry jam fan.
-Simon and G "Punky's Dilemma"

2.And the devil's clock struck midnight and the skies lit up again, and the battlefield where heaven stood, was blown to hell again.
-Garth Brooks "Belleau Wood"

3. When the last thing we notice, is the color of skin and the first thing we look for is the beauty within.
-Garth Brooks "We Shall Be Free"

4. I'd rather have sticks and stones and broken bones, than the words you say to me. 'cause I know bruises heal, and the cuts will seal, but your words beat the life outta me.
-Dave Barnes "Sticks and Stones"

5.The whole song "Hey mama" by Kanye West. http://www.lyricstop.com/albums/kanyewest/heymama.html

In an different genre, the musical theater, there are lots of great songs. One that comes to mind is "Gaston" from "Beauty and the Beast". "I'm especially good at expectorating"

Papa D said...

That was my post on Gaston...and by the way "I'm especially good at expectorating" is rhymed with "I use antlers in all of my decorating"

Brad nailed it right on the head. In my opinion no one is even in the same ball park as Kanye West when it comes to great lines.

well, I am finally getting my brain to work.

1. sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers. Garth Brooks

That's it for now.

Okay, here's another one...

2."when I'm lying in your arms I'm born again." Billy Preson and Syreeta

this will take me a while...my brain is in fade mode.

Hope you don't mind if I jump in. I will admit to blog stalking you guys almost too much. I love your questions and I love music so it is hard to keep my mouth shut on this topic.

Stones taught me to fly
Love, it taught me to lie
Life, it taught me to die
So it's not hard to fall
When you float like a cannonball - Damien Rice, Cannonball

Paul said to Petey "You gotta rock yourself a little harder. Pretend the dove from above is a dragon and your feet are on fire." And I got a girl in the war, Paul the only thing I know to do. Is turn up the music and pray that she makes it through. - Josh Ritter, Girl In The War

White Americans, what, nothin' better to do? Why don't you kick yourself out? You're an immigrant too. Who's usin' who? What should we do? Well you can't be a pimp and a prostitute too. - White Stripes, Icky Thump

and I want you now
I want you now
I'll feel my heart implode
and I'm breaking out
escaping now
feeling my faith erode - Muse, Hysteria

Sorry that might have been too many but I could go on.
