Favorite quirky, fun, interesting, sometimes insightful sayings or phrases

I thought it would be fun to hear some of our favorite quirky, fun, interesting, sometimes insightful sayings or phrases. For example, "If a girl wants a yellow dog, she will get a yellow dog". (We got that from Mary McCain.) or "When someone offers you a breathmint, always take it."

My Grandpa always used to say, "If wishes were fishes, we'd all have a fry". I'm not sure what that means. I guess if wishes were as easy to come by as fishes . . . then I'm lost again.

Here's one..."You are never educated by the 2nd kick of a donkey".

I don't have as many to add to this one, but mom always talked about Leona Work Day, and said "From hell to breakfast" if that counts.

My Grandma would say, "to hell in a handbasket".

"Two ways to skin a cat"... who skins cats? And "Naked as a Jaybird"... don't they have feathers?

I once chided my black lab mate how he could leave his wife at home and go to the Rose Bowl or NCAA playoffs. "Sometime, John, you're going to come home and she will have left you." His answer was classic, "If she do, I'll have another before she gets to Wallula."

The first ones that I think of are the missionary/church lines.

"Beyond a shadow of a doubt" & "With every fiber of my being". My guess is we have each said these and could not explain what they mean.

I also like "It takes two to tango". I know nothing about the tango but I guess that it can be done alone.

"You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink". I am positive that I would not be able to lead a horse anywhere.

And one that Mom uses quite a bit. "Pee on the pot or get off" She often uses this about boys in the singles ward. FYI mom, Boys do not get on the pot to pee. And she does not use language like pee or pot. Can you hear her saying "I am peeing on the pot, I will be out in a minute"

My favorite fun saying was the best advice I've ever received. "Don't sweat the petty things, and don't pet the sweaty things."

My this is a fun one...I guess I should say cut bait or fish instead of pee on the pot or get off...not thinking that boys/men do not pee on the pot...good catch Andy.

I also say to hell in a handbasket...whatever that means.

I remember my dad saying "I relish it but I can't handle it" referring to H.O. Miller who had no teeth.

I have 2 Mary McCain statements that stick out in my mind..."Which corner of the teacup did you look in?" And my favorite " just like a turd in a skilet"...that is beyond me...

my new favorite is "went over like a turd in a punch bowl." Now, that I can visualize.

Grandma Grace was famous for "shave my head and call me baldy", or "oh, Moses Lake, Washington!"

Dad those bands did ALOT of drugs in the 60's.

Stefany that fish thing makes no sense at all, could you have misunderstood Fenton.

In college I was with 9 other people, we were each given a cat. Guess what we all shaved our cat the exact same way.

The two things that mentioned twice, Hell and Turd.

Are we still measuring things based on the Number of "Shakes Nanny goat's tail" or have we moved on to time?

GeGe Denise said...

I believe it is quicker than "2 shakes of a nanny goat's tail"...which i guess is pretty quick...which also goes along with "quick like a bunny"

I told a kid in therapy today that if he makes the choices that he has made before again that he'll be "up a creek". He asked me what I meant by that :). (I don't normally use weird sayings in therapy; perhaps this blog is what made me think of it.)

I get that bunny's are quick, but are nanny goats tails quicker than other tails?

Anchorage has a Ship Creek, so when people say up ship creek that is where it comes from. But I believe that as long as you have paddles you can be up a creek.

I do not know how quick a nanny goat's tail is but I think pretty quick...I do not know if it is quicker than a bunny though.

Then there are the famous
Einstein quotes:

1.We don't know one millioneth of one percent of anything.

2. The distinction between past present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion

One of our patients just said that he "was finer than frog hair." However fine that is.
