Thoughts on the Oscars

Well, another Academy Awards has come and gone. Kate Winslet now has a well deserved Oscar, and Hugh Jackman was fantastic as the host, so I'm happy. I also enjoyed Steve Martin and Tina Fey as presenters, as well as Ben Still as Joaquin Phoenix (who p.s., I think is faking it; that's the only explaination I have for Casey Affleck recording the whole crazy thing). Didn't love the church reference nor the previous acting winners long speeches to the acting nominees. . . .they need to return to the previous winner presenting it. Other than that, it was well done. I enjoyed the montages as well as the singing and dancing (including Anne Hathaway, who at times annoys me).

As for the outfits.. . The best dressed men: Daniel Craig and Brad Pitt.
Best dressed women: Angelina Jolie (I haven't loved any other dresses this awards season but this was good), Anne Hathaway (the red carpet dress), Taraji P. Henson, and Tina Fey. I also liked Amy Adams dress (congrats to Caroline Herrera who redeemed herself after the hideousness of Renee Zelwegger at the Golden Globes) and Nicole Kidman. I was so-so on Kate Winslet (she normally does better. . . I disliked her hair more and more as the night went on) and Penelope Cruz. I hated Beyonce's dress, and my worst dressed of the night goes to Reese Witherspoon. She is capable of so much more.

Here are some pictures of the Oscar dinner. We kept things small and mostly family this year-- the sisters, Mary and her (young) aunt Tracy, and Kiersten. Definately not the same as with the parents, but it is an attempt to carry on the tradition that Mom started.

I did not hear the refernce to the church so please explain...I did not like Kate Winslet's hair either and thought her dress was just okay. I loved Amy Adams's dress and thought that Brangelina looked fabulous. I loved everything about Hugh Jackman and the Musical Is Back number and kudos to Beyonce for the little "At Last" number considering how rude what's her duck was about her singing it at the Inaugural Ball. The party looks fabulous...I am sorry to have missed it...Love you all.

The writer (I think) of Milk won. And during his speech he talked about growing up in a conservative Mormon home. Later said churches should accept them or something like that and that God loves the gays.

He did say that his Mother loved him and was supportive which I thought was ok.

Why is no one mentioning the horrible interviewing on the Red Carpet?

Also I enjoyed Will Smith quite a bit. And any time my man Christopher Walken gets to speak I enjoy it.

This is what he said, "When I was 13 years old, my beautiful mother and my father moved me from a conservative Mormon home in San Antonio, Texas, to California, and I heard the story of Harvey Milk. It gave me hope. It gave me the hope to live my life; it gave me the hope that one day I could live my life openly as who I am and that maybe even I could fall in love and one day get married. Most of all, if Harvey had not been taken from us 30 years ago, I think he'd want me to say to all of the gay and lesbian kids out there tonight who have been told they are less than by their churches, or by the government, or by their families, that you are beautiful, wonderful creatures of value. That no matter what everyone tells you, God does love you, and that very soon, I promise you, you will have equal rights federally across this great nation of ours." By mentioning that he was Mormon then talking about churches that tell gays and lesbians that they are "less than" he gives the impression that he thinks the LDS Church does that. Obviously he is not familiar with President Hinckley and how much he loved people who are struggling with same sex attraction, or with any other church leader for that manner. The comment bothered me and I was done for the night. I'm stubborn that way. (Saturday night I gave up on The Diary of a Mad Black Woman because something in it bothered me . . . I feel sorry for Andy who has to live with me and my stubborness!)

I changed my mind on some things that I wrote. . . I decided I live the 5 past winners talking to the nominees. And after seeing pictures, I don't like Amy Adams and Nicole Kidman's dresses as much (not hate. . that still is for sure the case with Reese and Beyonce.. just not as much). I liked Jennifer Anistons as well. And I really missed a Jack Black/Will Ferrel singing moment.

well, I missed that speech...it would have bothered me...but what the hey, I liked the former winners giving out the awards and it was fun to see Christopher Walken...I have had a big crush on him since he was in Sarah Plain and Tall...he was so handsome and romantic and yes, I am talking about Christopher Walken and I loved him on SNL with the cowbell. I am anxious to see the People magazine and will bring it on the cruise so we can rehash it. I loved the rainbow jello for the gays.
